Master Program European and European Legal Studies

Are you fascinated by the European integration process and its impact on other regions of the world? Do you want to better understand and help shape this process? Are you looking for a career in which sound legal, economic and political science knowledge of European integration is essential? Have you already completed your first degree, primarily in the fields of law, economics or political science, with outstanding results? Then you should apply for a place with us. The possibility to online application is available annually until June 30.

The one-year interdisciplinary Master's program "European and European Legal Studies" is offered by the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences at Universität Hamburg in cooperation with the Institute for European Integration of the Stiftung Europa-Kolleg Hamburg, an academic institution at the University of Hamburg in accordance with § 95 HmbHG, carried out. In this degree program, the degree of a "Master of Arts (M.A.)" or a "Master of Laws (LL.M.)" can be obtained.

We can look back on more than 15 years of successful cooperation between the University of Hamburg and the Europa-Kolleg Hamburg, which celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2013. Over the years, we have constantly adapted the contours of our degree programs to new developments and challenges in the European integration process. Many of the more than 650 graduates of previous courses from over fifty countries are now working successfully in international institutions, national administrations, law firms and the private sector.

The Master's degree course has a modular structure in accordance with the requirements of the Bologna Process. It has been positively evaluated and accredited by the AQAS Accreditation Commission on November 22/23, 2010. A special feature of our program is that you can also live at the Europa-Kolleg Hamburg. Tuition fees

for the mast programs

Overview

For the two-semester Master's degree course in European and European Legal Studies, tuition fees totaling EUR 8,500.00 are charged.
The tuition fees include participation in all courses, tutorials and excursions, as well as extra-curricular activities such as visits and conferences. The costs for teaching materials and examinations are also included in the tuition fees. However, housing and living costs are not included in the tuition fees.

Tuition fees are payable in three installments:

  • 1,500.00 EUR 15 days after declaration of acceptance;
  • EUR 3,500.00 before commencement of studies in the winter semester by September 1;
  • EUR 3,500.00 before the start of studies in the summer semester by March 1.

Declaration on the payment of tuition fees and social security contributions

Please note our declaration on the assumption of tuition fees and social security contributions. You will be asked to agree to this as part of the online application process. If you are offered a place on the Master's degree program "European and European Legal Studies" in the further course of the application and selection procedure, you will be obliged to commence your studies and pay the tuition fees after submitting the declaration of acceptance.

Semester contribution/semester ticket of the University of Hamburg

In addition to the tuition fees for the Master's degree program "European and European Legal Studies", a semester fee must be paid to the University of Hamburg for each semester. This currently amounts to approx. 390 EUR per semester and consists of a semester fee of approx. 340 EUR and an administrative fee of 50 EUR.
The semester fee includes, among other things, the fee for the Universität Hamburg SemesterTicket, which entitles you to use the Hamburg public transport network (HVV).

Housing and living costs

Housing and living costs are generally between EUR 800 and EUR 1,200.
The monthly rent for a room in Hamburg is between EUR 400 and EUR 800; for example, the monthly rent for an apartment in the Europa-Kolleg Hamburg Foundation hall of residence is EUR 575.
You will need around EUR 400 per month for food.
The cost of statutory health insurance for students is around EUR 100 per month.

Exams, degrees & language

Teaching and examination languages

The main language of instruction and examination is English and it is always possible to complete the entire Master's degree program in English.

Examinations and credit points

Each module is completed with an examination, whereby different forms of examination are used (oral examination, written examination, term paper, presentation, exercise completion).

Credit points (CP) are awarded for each successfully completed module in accordance with the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS).
A total of 60 CP can be achieved. This does not include

  • 30 LP on the basic area
  • 15 LP in the chosen specialization area
  • 15 LP for the Master's thesis.

Academic degrees

Upon successful completion of the individual modules and a Master's thesis graded at least "sufficient" (4.0), Universität Hamburg awards the academic degree of "Master of Arts (M.A.)".
The title "Master of Laws (LL.M.)" is only open to students who have a first degree in law. It is also awarded on the condition that the course content is predominantly law-related.
