Overview of the book:
In the face of globalization, internationalization and Europeanization, on the one hand, more and more steering competencies are required beyond the nation-states in order to compensate for the steering losses of the latter. On the other hand, fears of globalization are unsettling citizens and causing renationalization tendencies with a protectionist orientation. There is no doubt that the concept of statehood is changing and that traditional certainties in thinking about the state must be questioned. What answers can be given to the question “Quo Vadis State?”, however, is anything but clear. The fifth colloquium of the Peter Häberle Foundation at the University of St. Gallen, which was held in June 2015 together with the Europa-Kolleg Hamburg, therefore takes up the question of divergent understandings of the state from an international and cross-disciplinary perspective. The anthology sees itself primarily as an invitation to critical further thinking.
