This book describes the path of Germany and the Germans to Europe and is a political analysis of the history of this people in the center of Europe. Starting with the Peace of Westphalia up to the present, the constellations of power and interests in Europe and the background for political decisions are explained in a vivid way.

The author presents the conflicts of the rulers or states of Europe and thus shows how territories and the people living there were assigned to other dominions in the context of wars but also of peace agreements without taking into account the interests of the population.

Finally, the path of Germany after the Second World War, from the economic and later political integrations in Europe to the reunification of West and East Germany is described.

Prof. Dr. Hans-Joachim Seeler, born in 1930, was a senator of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, a member of the European Parliament and president of the Stiftung Europa-Kolleg Hamburg.
