MEELS students in front of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Employment, Transport and Technology of Schleswig-Holstein in Kiel with Dr. Hans Arno Petzold. On May 27th our students of the Master Programme European and European Legal Studies (MEELS) visited the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Employment, Transport and Technology of Schleswig-Holstein in Kiel. They were accompanied by John Beuren and Christina Simmig, the new programme coordinators.
At the ministry, Dr. Hans Arno Petzold, Deputy Head of Unit for EU Affairs, gave an interesting talk on the topic of ‘State Aid Practice in a German Federal State’. After providing some background on the history of the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein and its relations to Hamburg, he went on to carve out their respective positions within the multilevel legal system of the European Union, and in the process pointing to specific problems concerning the allocation of subsidies.

There was ample opportunity for our students to ask all their questions, as Dr. Petzold took the time to sit down for lunch with them after his talk.
