The Europa-Kolleg Hamburg in cooperation with its partners at Internationaler Umweltechtstag Hamburg e.V., University of Hamburg and Bucerius Law School will host the third Hamburg International Environmental Law Conference 2016.

In 2011, when the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg was awarded the title of ‘European Green Capital’ the Hamburg International Environmental Law Conference (HIELC) with about 200 participants from 30 countries premiered. High-ranking experts in the fields of law, economics, political and natural sciences discussed the challenges of climate change and protection of the marine environment. The third Hamburg International Environmental Law Conference will build upon and continue this international and interdisciplinary dialogue.

“We are pleased to announce that in cooperation with our partners we will be coordinating the third Hamburg International Environmental Law Conference 2016. The Europa-Kolleg Hamburg will lend its scientific expertise to the conference and to this very relevant and global issue”, states Professor Dr. Markus Kotzur, Managing Director of the Institute for European Integration. Completing the scientific advisory board are Professor Dr. Nele Matz-Lück from Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel and Professor Dr. Alexander Proelss from Trier University. Under the title ‘A Sea Change for Sustainable Ocean Resource Governance’, the conference will be dedicated to examining problems associated with balancing the economically efficient use of ocean resources and the preservation of the oceans’ ecosystem. Drawing on contributions from both academics and practitioners in the field, the main topics deep sea mining, energy-generation from the sea and ocean bed pipe systems will be focal points of the discussion. Recent developments and trends in the aforementioned fields will be presented and requirements for new laws, aiming to ensure responsible management of resources going forward, will be determined by participants of the conference.

Further details will be published shortly on the official conference website at www.hielc.org
