Theory and Policy of Cohesion

Motivation / Purpose

Since the Treaty of Maastricht, the EU pursues the goals of economic and social cohesion. With the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty, the aim of territorial cohesion has been added. Apart from agricultural policy, most of the EU’s expenses are dedicated to cohesion policy and therefore its objectives are of great political interest. Depending on the objectives and their implementation, Member States may consequently benefit differently from structural funds. In scientific terms, it is of interest to capture the impact and result of cohesion policy in its various appearances and to analyze how it should be shaped to account at the best for its purpose. Moreover, the questions of whether and how cohesion policy may sustainably strengthen competitiveness and employment within the European Union are raised.
