On 28 June 2019, the Europa-Kolleg Hamburg, in cooperation with the Friedrich A. von Hayek Gesellschaft e.V., successfully hosted an interdisciplinary conference on questions of change in the European Union for the third time. During the event “Changing Arithmetics of the European Union” exciting questions about the potential effects of Brexit, the future cooperation within the European Union and the role of the European Union on the international level were discussed. The question as to whether the crises of the European Union could not only damage it but provide an opportunity was a crucial one.

The event started with a welcome speech by Prof. Dr. Markus Kotzur and Prof. Dr. Wolf Schäfer. The various rounds of discussions were first opened with contributions from professors and then critically commented on by students of the Master Programme in European and European Legal Studies as well as by academic staff from Leuphana University of Lüneburg. These comments then led to a discussion with the audience, which also had the opportunity to ask questions and make comments to the speakers.
